What is it Like to Attend Ohio Wesleyan University
What is it Like to Attend Ohio Wesleyan University Hannah earned her bachelors degree in theatre and English literature from Ohio Wesleyan University. She specializes in American literature tutoring, test prep tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at Ohio Wesleyan University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Hannah: Ohio Wesleyan University is located in Delaware, Ohioa small suburb of the states capital, Columbus. One of the best parts of OWU is its location; you get the college-town community of Delaware with big-city Columbus right in your backyard. I never had a car during my time on campus, but I had plenty of friends with vehicles. Campus is completely walkable, so a car or a bus is not necessary to get to class. I felt safe throughout my time on campus. Whenever I was out with friends, there was an unwritten rule that no one would walk home alone. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Hannah:Professors and academic advisors at OWU are extraordinarily accessible. I became very close with the professors in my department. I cannot say enough good things about my professors at OWUthey challenged me to do my best work, they offered help when I was struggling, and they shaped me into the scholar I am today. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Hannah:OWU is a residential campusover 90 percent of students live on campus, either in residence halls, SLUs (Small Living Units), fraternity houses, or themed houses. SLUs are unique to OWUeach house is dedicated to a specific set of values and beliefs, and each house member must complete one house project each year. Each residence hall has something different to offer. From the 24/7quiet hours of the honors residence hall, to the first-year-only Bashford and Thomson halls, there is a place for everyone. There are two main dining halls on campus: Smith on the residential side, and the Food Court in Hamilton-Williams Campus Center. There are various cafes and bakeries spread throughout campus, and there is even a convenience store located in Thomson Hall that accepts food points. In addition to on-campus dining, students receive 100 off-campus food points each semester, which can be redeemed at various restaurants in downtown Delaware. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Hannah:Psychology, zoology, economics, and English are popular majors on campus. I majored in theatre and English literature. I went into college knowing I would major in theatre, and I like to joke that English happened accidentally. I am very pleased with how my university supported my areas of study. I could not have asked for a better college experience. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Hannah:I had no problem making friends as a freshman. However, the way OWU structures orientation makes forming connections with new people inevitable. As an incoming student, I was adamantly against Greek life. But, after spending time with the members of a particular sorority, I warmed up to the idea of going through recruitment. By Thanksgiving Break, I could hardly wait to join. Accepting a bid was one of the best decisions Ive ever made, and my sorority experience was one of the best parts of my college days. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Hannah:I didnt take advantage of the Career Center all that much, simply because I found out about theatre opportunities through my professors and my own research. Career fairs came to campus often. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Hannah:The library is packed before and during finals week, but thats to be expected. The student union gets crowded at lunch, simply because its the prime lunch location. Residence hall lounges are definitely utilized, either for study sessions or meeting up with friends. Describe the surrounding town. Hannah:Delaware is a small college town with fun shops and restaurants. Columbus is about thirty minutes away from campus. Students venture into town, but campus is always buzzing with an event. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Hannah:The student body is rather intimate. I went to a small high school, so I knew I wanted to attend a small university. I was pleased with the small class sizes; I never had a class of more than 35 people. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Hannah:During my last semester at OWU, I took a course called How To Write Like Shakespeare. After extensive research, analysis of Shakespeares work, and plotting, my group produced a five act play called The Tragedie of Tom Riddle. The course was a perfect way for me to put all of the Shakespeare knowledge I had gathered over my four years at OWU into practice by executing an extensive imitation exercise. It was the seventh class I had taken with that English professor, and it was a wonderful way to conclude my English major at OWU. Check out Hannahs tutoring profile. What Not to Discuss During a College Interview
What Not to Discuss During a College Interview While every college admission process is different, you may find that you are required to participate in an interview as part of the admissions process for colleges you are interested in attending. The interview stage of the admission process can be very intimidating, as you want to make sure you perform at your absolute best. While each interview may be distinct, here are some general topics to avoid discussing. [RELATED: How to Ace Your College Interview] Disparaging remarks Try to keep your interview discussions as positive as possible. There is no need to bash other schools, rant about negative people in your life, or touch on really anything disparaging for that matter. If you had a tough experience in school, show the interviewer what you learned from the situation. Honesty is the best policy, so just be the best version of yourself. Money Interviewers do not need to hear how much money your family makes or what financial help you are seeking for tuition. Keep conversations like these out of your college interviewfinancial aid is another topic for another time. As far as discussions about scholarships are concerned, its not necessarily a bad idea to ask if the interviewer knows of any great scholarship opportunities for which you could apply. But you do not want to be too pushy! If they do not have any insight, it would be a good idea to just move on. How much you prepared for the interview You want to prepare for the interview as much as you can, while also making sure you do not sound too rehearsed. You may even want to consider participating in mock interviews beforehand. However, you shouldnt try to impress your interviewer by sharing how much time went into preparation for the interview, or even worse, how nervous you are. It is human nature to be worried about being interviewed, but try not to let it show. Remember to be confident and simply engage in a natural conversation with your interviewer. Admittance It is inappropriate to inquire to your college interviewer whether or not you will be accepted to the school. Instead, help make their decision a bit easier by not touching on such things and maturely addressing the questions at hand. If you make the effort to be a stellar interviewee and focus on the relevant topics being discussed, you are more likely to impressand more likely to get an acceptance letter! Mundane information about the school You should not ask obvious questions to your interviewer that you can easily look up online. Details such as how many students attend or what year the school was founded should be things you already know. Instead, ask your interviewer more educated questions that you cannot find by doing a simple Google search. Ask about things like the campus culture, outside involvement opportunities, or educational experiences offered outside the classroom. Any lack of interest Not every school is going to be your first choice, and by no means should you ever tell your interviewer this! You never know what you may learn about the school in your interview, so be sure to go in with an open mind. You may find that the college actually checks off all of your requirements for the perfect school. Now that you know what not to discuss in your college interview, be sure to brush up on all of the topics that you should discuss as well. Remember to not only tell the interviewer about your experiences, but also show them. Use vivid examples of all that you have accomplished and you can ace that interview. Good luck!

Should You Pursue a DBA
Should You Pursue a DBA DBA? What is that? you might be wondering. Is an MBA no longer enough? Which option should I choose? If you are deciding whether or not to earn an advanced degree in business administration, you should consider several key points before you act. Here are three questions to ask yourself about earning a DBA: What is a DBA? A DBA, or Doctor of Business Administration, is a terminal degree in business. It is more advanced than pursuing an MBA, but less well known than an MBA or a PhD in the same field. An MBA, or Master of Business Administration, typically takes one to three years to complete. Like a PhD in business administration, a DBA takes a minimum of three years to complete, though it may extend to five or more years. Both a DBA and a PhD combine formal coursework with extensive research, and candidates must have advanced critical thinking and analytical skills in order to succeed. While earning a PhD in business administration involves creating new theory, students in a DBA program apply theory to business, effectively putting their research into action. In other words, DBA candidates not only perform quantitative and qualitative data analysis on practical business issues, they also implement their findings in actual corporate situations. Who should earn a DBA? A Doctor of Business Administration can certainly position you for business success. DBA and PhD candidates often wish to expand their knowledge of areas like marketing, organizational behavior, and strategy. A PhD in business administration can lead to a research career at a university, in government, or at a business, whereas graduates of a DBA program often go on to become administrators, consultants, entrepreneurs, or executives in their particular area of business. So if you are interested in applying in-depth research to the business world at a senior level in the public or private sector, then you should explore the possibility of earning a Doctor of Business Administration. Should you earn a DBA? Is your goal to perform intense research with a cohort of like-minded thinkers and leaders? Would you like to apply your research to actual business practices? Do you enjoy developing studies on managerial functions and policies, and are you willing to share your results in research publications? If your answer is yes, consider investigating DBA programs at several universities, and try to determine how they can help you advance your career. Look at institutions that focus not only on your current industry, but also on areas that you would like to studyand transition into. Also examine the career paths of alumni from those programs could you translate their trajectories into personal success? If you are not interested in using cutting-edge, critical reasoning to solve high-level business problems, or if you are not interested in employing methods from various disciplines to address corporate issues on a global scale, this path may not be for you. Before applying to any higher education program, consider your desired career path. Like pursuing an MBA, earning a Doctor of Business Administration requires a significant investment of your time, effort, and money. Whether it takes three, four, five, or more years, a DBA can help you shift your priorities from simply working in your current job to advancing your future career. With that investment, you have the opportunity to transform the world of business and management with the expert knowledge, sophisticated analysis, and invaluable insights gained from your Doctor of Business Administration degree.

Twice Exceptional Kids with ADHD
Twice Exceptional Kids with ADHD Twice exceptional (2e) kids have a learning difficulties or attention problems but are also highly gifted in at least one area. The term twice exceptional is most often used to describe kids with exceptional academic abilities, but many 2e kids also have musical or artistic gifts. While all kids have strengths and weaknesses, twice exceptional kids have these in the extreme. For example, a 2e child may score in the 99th percentile on a test of verbal language abilities but only in the 10th percentile on a measure of processing speed. Or they may have highly advanced conceptual math abilities but struggle to produce written work that is legible and meets basic grade-level requirements. What happens when a 2e child has ADHD? When ADHD is part of the picture, a 2e child may be gifted in his or her ability to grasp complex concepts, engage in critical thinking, and communicate his or her knowledge and understanding verbally, but the childs test scores reflect only average (or even below-average) performance. Without a clear understanding of the impact of ADHD symptoms on factors like motivation, attention to detail, persistence, and organization, parents and teachers become frustrated by what they perceive as willful underperformance. They complain that the child is being lazy or simply doesnt care about the quality of his or her work. In reality, the 2e child may be working very hard to compensate for his or her weaknesses, but without proper support the efforts rarely translate into lasting improvements. Unfortunately, the messages that these kids hear about laziness and carelessness take a toll over time and their self-esteem suffers. To make matters worse, their sub-par academic performance prevents th em from getting one of the things 2e children need the most at school: recognition of their strengths and access to classes and activities that challenge and engage their exceptional intellect. All 2e kids are at risk for being excluded from the advanced classes that they need to reach their full potential. 2e kids with ADHD are also at risk for having their ADHD go undetected and undiagnosed. Why? With their high intelligence, 2e kids can often perform in the average range academically despite their ADHD symptoms. While they are underperforming relative to their true abilities, they are not necessarily underperforming relative to their classmates. As a result, the school doesnt identify them as needing an evaluation or extra support. Parents may be frustrated that their child isnt achieving at the level they believe he or she is capable of, but they also arent seeing some of the typical red flags that would normally trigger an ADHD assessment. What can parents do to help? Obtain an evaluation. Twice exceptional kids are complex, and a full psychoeducational assessment or neuropsychological assessment (which includes cognitive and achievement testing) can help parents, teachers, and the child develop a clear picture of their strengths and weaknesses. In some cases, schools will provide a psychoeducational assessment as part of their special education services. In other cases, parents need to seek out these evaluations privately through a psychologist, neuropsychologist, or learning specialist. Seek out special education services and academic support. Many 2e children qualify for special education services services that address their weaknesses and their gifts. An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will outline the educational goals, accommodations, and services that your child needs. His or her access to these services and progress toward individual goals will be tracked and reviewed regularly in team meetings that parents (and often the child) attend. If your child has areas of academic weakness, consider supplementing his or her school-based services with individualized academic support from a private learning center or learning specialist. Advocate for your child. 2e kids need access to advanced classes just as much as any other gifted child. With the proper support and accommodations, 2e children can thrive in an accelerated academic environment. Without a high level of intellectual stimulation, 2e kids with ADHD are at high risk of becoming bored at school, which will exacerbate their ADHD symptoms and ultimately lead to even greater academic underachievement (see my previous post on this topic [link to Understanding Boredom and ADHD]). Provide emotional support. Talk to your child about his or her strengths and weakness, and his or her unique gifts. Help your child process feelings about being different from other kids, and frustration over his or her ADHD symptoms getting in the way. Many 2e kids will feel like there is something wrong with them, and unconditional love and support from parents can go a long way in counteracting these feelings. Getting to know other 2e kids can also help. If you dont know of other families of 2e kids in your area, check out one of the many Facebook groups for parents to 2e kids to get connected. Treat the ADHD symptoms. 2e kids can reach their full potential when their ADHD symptoms are well managed. Work with mental health providers to obtain evidence-based treatments for your child and consider including medication in your childs symptom management plan. ABOUT DR. Online Tutoring Advantages of the New Approach
Online Tutoring Advantages of the New Approach Today we continue to acquaint our readers with peculiarities of the online education. As it often happens with all innovations there are many obstacles on the way of extension of the online tutoring in spite of all benefits it has in comparison with the traditional ways of tutoring. The main of them is a mistrust from the side of parents. If they canât see a real tutor how can they be sure that their child will get real knowledge? However there are the same demands for the online tutors as for traditional ones: professional competence, individual approach for the student, responsibility and honesty. Tutors of the public online schools must be certified. Besides online tutors must be skillful in modern technologies. Electronic books used in online education are rather unfamiliar for older generation. But the youth of today belongs to the network formation and for them the electronic sources of information are even more natural than the paper books. Modern students willingly welcome all high technologies involved into educational process because the achieved skills will help them in further self-development and future career. In our days information technologies penetrated into all aspects of our life and they are the main tool for the majority of the successful people. There are some categories of people for whom the online tutoring is the only one available education. Some of them suffer from severe allergies or other medical issues. Others canât bear school violence and bullying. Some students live in remote areas where face-to-face tutors are not available or they may be interested in a rare subjects such as nuclear engineering or Farsi. Online tutoring provides for a safe opportunity for everybody to get education without meeting with that kind of problems. Sometimes students claim that it is difficult to stay focused in the home environment. But in fact even when we go to traditional schools we learn only part of information during the lessons and the rest of work including studying variable informational sources must be done at home anyway. So itâs only a question of the correct organisation of the learning process. The main advantages of the online tutoring are the following: Time saving: modern technologies enable real-time interaction between tutors and students in any time. All materials are available in electronic format and there is no need to spend time for going to a library or a book store. Mobility: students can study in any place and in any convenient time, even during a trip abroad or late in the evening. Internet connection is the only thing which is needed. The length of each lesson is also individual. Economy and ecology: both tutors and students stay beside their computers, they donât use the cars and so they save fuel and donât pollute the environment. Besides they donât need to buy paper textbooks which saves both money and trees. Many electronic materials are free of cost. Sometimes programs and computer equipment are also provided for free. Internationalization: students get access to a great number of professional tutors living all over the world. The language barrier doesnât exist anymore. English language is widely spread in all civilized countries and online translation services are available. Tolerance: interaction via Internet neglects ethnic, income, class, sex and all other differences between students and tutors because visual and voice contact is possible but not necessary condition. Safety and comfort: some people feel uneasy in crowded places and prefer to study at home; others can better concentrate in the open air with a plenty of oxygen. Only online tutoring can allow each of them to study in the most convenient surroundings. There is no physical contact so it also eliminates any threat of physical violence. No strangers visit your home and your property and life are absolutely safe. Privacy: tutor and student may not know the real names, appearance and location of each other. In some cases it can be also important. Parent control: online tutoring usually takes place at home so parents have better chances to control the process. Combination of all these favourable factors of course contributes into better mastering of the new information. Besides students can record a tutoring sessions and listen them several time for better understanding and memorizing of the studying material.
